From Flooded to Fried: Helping Turf Recover

For turf managers across the Midwest and South, this summer has delivered stress from both directions. Prolonged rainfall and flooding have left soils saturated and roots struggling for oxygen, while extreme heat continues to push turf beyond its comfort zone.

Whether you manage a golf course, sports field, or residential lawns, the priority is the same: help stressed turf recover without adding more stress.

Start With the Growing Environment

Following flooding or extended rainfall, restoring the growing environment is critical. No special cultural practice is required before using Foliar-Pak products, but anything that improves overall plant health can support recovery. If the area is saturated, focus first on improving conditions so the turf can dry and breathe.

Focus on practices that increase air exchange, drainage, and air movement. Venting or aerification can help oxygen return to saturated root zones. Improving drainage moves excess water away, while fans, selective tree clearing, and other airflow-improving practices help the turf canopy and soil surface dry more effectively.

When Turf Needs the “OH $H*T” Spray

For areas that have taken significant damage from flooding, prolonged wet conditions, or extreme heat, turf can be left with weakened roots, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and little energy for recovery. In these high-stress situations, Foliar-Pak’s recovery-focused OH $H*T spray can be an important tool to help support the plants as they rebuild and recover.

A key component of the spray is Grow-In, considered the primary recovery tool in this situation. Grow-In helps support new rooting and plant recovery, two priorities when turf has been pushed hard by environmental stress.

The second key component of the spray is Foundation Forty. During stressful conditions, supplying amino acids can provide a “metabolic gift” to the plant. Rather than requiring the turf to manufacture everything it needs while already stressed, Foundation Forty supplies a concentrated pool of amino acids the plant can use in its metabolic pathways. Increased rates have also shown strong recovery responses in severely stressed turf.

The third component of the spray can be adjusted based on what the turf needs most. Colonise Bio is an option when the focus is more heavily centered on the root zone, nutrient availability, and overall soil conditioning. Amperage is a strong choice when foliar health and visual recovery are priorities. Its nutrient package supports chlorophyll production, helping the plant rebuild its photosynthetic capacity and begin producing more of the energy required for continued recovery.

The spray doesn’t necessarily have to stop at three products. The OH $H*T spray’s third component is essentially “dealer’s choice,” depending on site conditions and recovery goals. Add additional products when hydration needs support, plant cells need strengthening, or other stress-related issues need addressing.

Help Turf Recover Stronger

No single fix can restore turf that has been flooded, waterlogged, or pushed to the limit by extreme heat. Recovery starts with improving the growing environment, which means restoring air exchange, drainage, and airflow, then supporting the plant with the nutrients and amino acids it needs to rebuild.

When damage is significant, Foliar-Pak’s OH $H*T spray gives turf managers a flexible recovery approach that can be tailored to site conditions and plant needs. By focusing on roots, chlorophyll, energy production, and overall plant function, the goal isn’t simply to make stressed turf look better; it’s to help it recover stronger and be better prepared for the next round of stress.
