Understanding Amino Acids: Stress Reduction

Previously, we discussed what amino acids are and what they do within plants. We debunked the idea that you should apply more amino acids to achieve more success—rather, a concentrated, targeted set of amino acids will provide the most benefit. In this blog post, we’ll explain some of the major benefits of AminoPrecise technology, which is the targeted set of amino acids in many of our products.

First, AminoPrecise increases nitrogen assimilation. Whether you apply nitrate, ammonium, or urea to the plant, it all becomes ammonia in the chloroplasts of the cells. Ammonia is toxic to plants, so the plant converts it into a non-toxic carbon molecule as quickly as possible. One of the amino acids helps speed up the process. By converting the nitrogen source into an organic compound, the amino acid makes it available for the plant to use.

AminoPrecise technology also increases chlorophyll synthesis in the plant. Chlorophyll production requires iron, magnesium, and amino acid. Therefore, supplying that amino acid to the plant helps it create more chlorophyll and achieve better color. Sometimes, this technology even allows you to achieve the same color with less nitrogen input.

Another process that benefits from amino acids is carbon assimilation. Two amino acids aid carbon assimilation in C3 and C4 turf. In C3 (typically cool-season) turf, the amino acid helps convert oxygen into usable carbon through a process called photorespiration. In C4 (typically warm-season) turf, the amino acid serves as a carbon carrier to fix carbon in the plant.

Amino acids are not simply limited to their specific roles within the plant, because they can also transfer into other amino acids. These are considered “upstream” amino acids that can convert into various other amino acids within a plant, which can then convert into even more amino acids. This process allows the plant to “decide” what it needs depending on its environmental conditions and current health.

Amino acid conversion is a powerful part of stress reduction. Some amino acids function as osmolytes to help plant cells retain water. Others are easy for the plant to convert into more complex osmolytes. Ultimately, you can empower your turf to manage its stress more effectively when you apply the right amino acids.
