There are numerous fertility products on the market, and they aren’t all designed to do the same thing. With so many options, it doesn’t take long for a fertility program to get more complicated than it needs to be. So before buying another fertility product, consider what contribution it will make to your programs.
Here are five questions to think about.
1. Can You Use it in Several Rounds?
Some fertility products have one very specific job, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need. But a product that can fit into several rounds throughout the season also has value.
Maybe it can be used when turf is actively growing. Maybe it also fits when lawns are dealing with summer stress or recovering in the fall. That kind of flexibility can make a product easier to work into an existing program.
If it only fits one specific situation, does it solve a big enough problem to earn its place? Think about where the product fits on your calendar. Is it useful during one short window, or can you work it into several parts of the season?
Versatility isn’t everything. But for an LCO managing a full season of applications, it can make a difference.
2. What Does It Add Beyond Basic Fertility?
Start with a simple question: What am I getting from this product that I’m not already getting?
A supplemental fertility product might help with color. It could support turf during stressful conditions. It might provide micronutrients, support soil biology, or help keep nutrients available.
But adding more ingredients isn’t automatically better. The product should have a clear job within the program.
If your base fertility already covers what the turf needs, another product that does the same thing may not add much. A better fit may fill a gap or address another need at the same time.
3. Do the Ingredients Make Sense Together?
A long ingredient list can look impressive. But more ingredients don’t automatically mean more value.
What matters is whether each ingredient has a clear role and whether those roles make sense together. Are the ingredients working toward a common goal, or are they simply packed into one product?
Look at the formulation as a whole. Each component should have a reason for being there and contribute to what the product is designed to do.
4. Will It Fit Into the Program You Already Have?
This is where a good product on paper can become a headache in the field. LCOs aren’t applying fertility in a vacuum. Depending on the round, fertilizers may be going out with herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, PGRs, or other products. Your supplemental fertility product needs to fit into that reality.
Ask a few practical questions. Will it tank mix with products you already use? Can it run through your current equipment? Will it cause problems with nozzles or screens? Can you add it to an already scheduled round, or will it require another trip?
Those details matter. A product can have a good agronomic story, but if it makes every application harder, it may not fit your operation.
5. Does It Make Sense for Your Business?
A product still has to make sense for your business. Look beyond the cost of the jug. What does it cost per acre? How much inventory will you need to carry? Does it require extra training or a separate application? And does it fit the way your crews already work?
A higher-cost product may make sense if there is a clear reason to use it. A lower-cost product may not add much value if it creates extra work or sits on the shelf most of the season.
The point isn’t to find the product that does the most. It’s about knowing what you’re paying for and whether it makes sense for your operation.
Build the Program Around What You Need
A good fertility program doesn’t need every product on the shelf. It needs products that have a clear purpose.
That thinking helped shape Foliar-Pak’s newest product, Carbon Complete. We developed it as a versatile supplemental fertility product that gives LCOs one product to support plant performance, stress recovery, soil and microbial activity, and nutrient availability in almost any round. To do that, it combines chelated iron, potassium, blackstrap molasses, targeted amino acids, and Armament® technology.
Whether you’re evaluating Carbon Complete or any other addition to your fertility program, the rule is the same: know why you’re adding it.
More products don’t necessarily make a better program. The right products do.
